For those who appreciate time spent in nature but have a limited schedule, we offer this trip, a quintessence of what the Danube Delta has to offer in terms of landscape beauty and biodiversity.
Our route starts on the Tulcea Branch and continues on a small portion of Channel 36 (the connection between the Tulcea and Chilia Branches, near the border with Ukraine) – the Trofilca Channel, a favorite spot of the blue kingfisher – Potcoava Lake, which often holds surprises.
We continue on the Northern Sireasa Channel to the lake locally known as "Cu Cotețe" (With Cages) due to the large number of birds nesting in the impressively tall willows.
Photographers can capture cormorants, great and little egrets, spoonbills, night herons, squacco herons, grey herons, and, with a bit of luck, the greedy pelicans of our Delta.
In the wide opening, you can quietly observe the majestic swans gliding gracefully.
Since time is limited, we will return, just 1.5 km from the border with Ukraine, on Channel 36 back to Tulcea.
If nature impresses you, we invite you to explore our longer excursions where time is more generous.

This is an exploration of the Danube Delta, between the Chilia and Sulina branches of the Danube. The chosen route offers an overview of the rich biodiversity gifted to this corner of the country. The adventure starts in Tulcea, and after about 15-20 minutes of adjusting to the atmosphere of the old river, we enter the "natural" area on Channel 36, which also connects us with our neighbors from Ukraine, occasionally revealing flocks of pelicans searching for food in the hidden lakes on either side of the channel.
Continuing through the Northern Sireasa area with the Trofilca and Northern Sireasa channels, passing by Potcoava Lake and Cu Cotețe Lake, each with its unique charm.
Entering the Sireasa and Periteasca channels introduces us to true tunnels of willows covered in wild vines, whose secrets are known only by the birds.
The discreet and cautious wild cat may rarely be spotted hunting in these mysterious places. The golden jackal might also be a surprising sight in these areas!
On the Șontea Channel, photographers can often capture the majestic white-tailed eagle, "king" of these lands, proudly watching over the entire area from above.
After passing Lake Nebunu (a strictly protected area), we enter a wider area, a favorite spot for coots, moorhens, and great egrets.
A curve called Candura Bend takes us onto the New Șontea Channel, a rarely visited area with a wide variety of birds. On a small hut, you may notice the sign for the "GVU Party" (Wet Neck Party) — a joke among the local fishermen.
After so much fresh air and beautiful sights, we stop for a delicious traditional fisherman's lunch on the shore of the Șontea Channel, where we will savor the local dishes. After a hearty meal, we relax on our way back along Channel 36 and then to Tulcea, reflecting on the day's magical experience.

We depart from Tulcea, enthusiastically following the Tulcea Branch towards Channel 36, then through the network of canals and lakes in Northern Sireasa, continuing along the Sireasa, Periteasca, and Sontea channels, areas already explored during the 3-4 and 6-7 hour trips. The highlight of this tour is the spectacular entrance to Radacinos Channel and Lake, followed by the stunning Fortuna Lake, adorned with white and yellow water lilies and a variety of bird species, all the way to the fisherman’s village of Mila 23.
Usually, the ones who welcome us are the pelicans! Then, it’s time for our hosts.
The locals, hard-working people with overwhelming hospitality, are genuinely happy to see visitors after the long and lonely winter days. They are excellent cooks and have learned over time that not everyone eats fish, so they are prepared with dishes for vegetarians, vegans, or those with allergies. However, our advice remains: DON'T MISS the fish dishes! They are cooked “just like mom used to make it – from the heart of the Delta.”
The tradition here is for the husband, a fisherman, to bring the “raw material” while the wife showcases her culinary talent, watching for the guest’s satisfaction. Very soon, you will feel like you've known your host forever and leave with the hope of returning.
After the hearty lunch, we continue our journey through the Catavaia Channel and Ligheanca Lake, followed by the Vacaru Channel and Lake, where pelicans and cormorants join forces to empty the lake of fish but kindly allow us to admire them from a distance without disturbing their feast.
Passing by Baclanesti Lake, we enter the Șontea Channel, abundant in birdlife diversity. The journey continues on the peaceful New Șontea Channel, where only the occasional local fisherman’s boats are seen. Swans, great and little egrets, coots, moorhens, various species of herons, ibises, rollers, and bee-eaters can be spotted here, all watched over by the majestic white-tailed eagle gracefully circling high above.
The excursion concludes along the winding Periteasca and Sireasa Channels, rich in lush vegetation, re-energizing us for a relaxing finish on Channel 36 towards our final destination – Tulcea.
